nice list mitch, how big is your fire eel?? - hope you've got a tight lid on that tank :)

mitch

Cheers lads, the fire eel is 20"ish. The water level is low for the terrapins to bask so there's no probs with the eel escaping.

mitch, did you have to reinforce your foundations for those tanks?? and also who made your bases for your tanks? just wondering for the modest 3'3'2' tank i'm getting - but as it'll be in the living room i don't really want an all metal base

mitch
06-06-2008, 09:11 PM
No mate i never reinforced anything under the floor, but i inspected the joist and surrports first and found they were perfect and spaced out well.

i made the unit myself as it had to natch the kitchen.

Here is a link with the history of the tank incase interested :-

That reminds me i need to update it, a job for later.

I have on order 6 irregularis, 1 salvini, 4 Nebulferus and 4 lyonsi. (dont know where there going to go, i may have to put the panto's in the big tank or move them on)
Also have a nice choc which tenby2 has grown on for me that i should be picking up soon.

Ash
09-14-2008, 01:40 PM
did you order a male or female salvini mitch? just ordered a female myself and i can't wait "Cool"
also, when are you going to get around and post a new video of your tank "Blink1"

mitch
09-14-2008, 05:03 PM
Getting a female as thats all ross had left.

I'll try and sort a vid out later when i heve the new fish as there is nothing different from the exstsing vid i already have.

Saying that i have been thinking about doing one on the argenrea's, they are both great fish but one of them hasn't got the big black spots which makes him pure silver. He does have the very small dot on every scale like most have.

mitch
09-21-2008, 05:25 PM
The 6 irregularis, 1 salvini, 4 Nebulferus and 4 lyonsi. Arrived yesturday and they were put in with the panto's. I have lost 1 fish which is either a Nebulferus or a irregularis as i cant tell them apart now there together. The panto's are nipping a lot so they will be put into the big tank as soon as i have made some more hiding places.

But i have noticed that the Nebulferus/irregularis are nipping each other (i was warned about this by grummie last week) as i have no other tanks for them i'am not sure what to do. I should be collecting some more wood very soon so that will give more hiding places.

Btw what is the best tempretue for the Nebulferus and irregularis.

Also the choc which tenby2 has grown on for me is happy swimming around in the 8' tank. Cheers mark!

Rick Thibert
09-21-2008, 08:00 PM
Mitch, the irregularis have silver on the bottom of the operculums and look as if they are flaring them, but they aren't.

I got 14 of them from Ross as little guys but growing like mad! :) Lovely! What size did you get?

BC

mitch
09-21-2008, 08:11 PM
The irregularis and the Neb's are just over 2", i think the neb's were a bit smaller but i just can not see any differance at this size.

The lyonsi are 2.5-3" and the salv is 3"+

Rick do your irregularis nip each other? As i said earlie grummie di warn me that these do this last week.

Rick Thibert
09-21-2008, 08:42 PM
I've heard bad things about irregularis chasing the pants off each other, but as they are in with 10x Nanoluteus and a pair of Bartoni, things are OK at the moment. No doubt as they get bigger things will change, but no real aggression just yet.............. no doubt with sexual maturity things will get nasty! :(

All the nipping in the corner tank has of stoped for now, so thats good news.
Ordering a few more from ross to go in there aswell as a couple of others.

Also i have been offered a large male red terror, i have not kept these myself but have been told this one is very gentle compared to others, should i try it in the 8' tank???

Hi Mitch

Why not give the Festae a try, I think they are excellent fish and don't quite deserve the reputation they have. My four are in with 4 geos, a pair of heros and an assortment of cats. All in a 2 mtr tank, plenty of bogwood and remarkably little aggro. A single male would certainly be a fine addition in an 8 footer. Mine are all female, I think, but they are still good sized at 8", if you take it and it doesn't work I for one would be happy to take it off your hands.

Regards

Jim

Mitch man!! why do you think they got that name:)
I have kept females ok but large males imo are a different story.

Mate, 2 x 300g and a corner tank should be more than enough! (i think not!)
I got a 5x2x2 sitting in the back of the van aswell just havn't got the cash to set it up at the mo. Plus waiting for a good time to tell the misses that i have it.

Aztec, if i try it and it dont work would you be interested and if so how quick could you get it?

The Dovii are will be going in the 9' on the garage, but if i get in trouble at there size they would't cause to much trouble indoors in the 8'....... For a short while only!

On another note I have finally recived the fish from ross from last months rapps order, these are 2 x unrelated pairs of f1 Dovii, 1 x pair tiger mot's and 3 small gibbiceps.

But i have just put a couple off plec's in the 9' as there is loads of algee, whilst looking in the tank i noticed... which i knew i was going to have problems with one day but not for a while though, the males from the 2 pairs of dovii in there were proppa jaw locking, and they are only 5" at the mo.

Just think i am going to put a pair of umbees in there soon aswell!

The L114 i'ld say is about 7", no more than 8.

Good question Sash, the big boccourti was over 10" when i got her and the argee was about 9" if i remember right. Where as the jag was 7", the smaller bo apx 7-8" but the rest were all 3"-6".

And that catfish thing lol, i took on a few months back.

I don't cut the terrapins claws, the male has never had any front ones while i've had him but they also get the run of the garden if its nice so that helps keep the claws trim.

I think they are all around the 6" mark. A midas was put in with them and they dont get on and he want's to keep the midas and let him grow to a nice size along with a pair of con's. He already has the female con and my lfs have some big male's at the mo.

A mate, he's mad the argee and hetro are very nice and a good size. The nic and the cutteri dont look to happy at the mo as the being chased by the other 2. All in a 3' tank at the mo but the argee and hetro will go in the pond probably tomorrow so the smaller 2 can rest.

Rick, its not much to see just a horrible black pond in the corner of the front room!

A quick update:-

Not a lot has changed, I still have a pond in my front room but i have been given my old 9' tank from my old house so the pond can go soon.
On the fish front i have sadly lost my oscar who i've had for years. :(
Although i ordered 14 fish from Ross's last rapp's order only 4 Kraussi got to me. They are great little fish and i suspect i have 2 male and 2 female's as the smallest is always being chased into a corner by the bigest (which i think are the males) and the other 2 are aloud to do what they like. But being cichlids this will probably change by the time i've finished this post!

Yesturday i picked up a little snakehead from my lfs, have been looking at them for a while now. I put him in with the kraussi, although they picked on him at first it didnt take long before he was chasing them. Not wanting to harm them i took it out and placed it in the pond where if i am honest i am surprised he has lasted the night.

Not knowing a lot about the differant snakeheads i didnt (nor the shop) know what type it is but looking it up i'm 100% he's a little....... Giant snakehead!!!!!

What have i done???

Kenny

mark wright
04-04-2010, 11:47 PM
I'm no 'expert' but I've kept a few...orientalis, micropeltes, pleurophthalmus, obscurus, insignis.

Pleurophthalmus are one of my fave fish - the only shoaling sp(?) and quite peaceful.

Update:-

All fish are now moved out off pond into the 9' and i am glad to say they all look in very good condition.

I have lost since my last stock update my large oscar and my Bullhead catfish which is disapointing but all the rest look great.
Although i am happy i can see them now in the tank it's not th best looking tank in the world as it's just been trown together quickly but when i've finished hopefully it'll look better. But at the mo it looks like a lfs sump tank that has took a load of big fish in to sell on if you know what i mean, but still it's better than a pond. (i think)

Will update with pic's/vid asap.

Anyone fancy seeing the fish are more than welcome but please excuse there surroundinds for now ;)

It has come to light over the last couple of days that my Bo's are in fact male and femle. I've had my boubts over the male since he came out of the pond as he has developed a lump on his head but over the last day he has been displaying to the female and they have taken over and cleaned the cave where the catfish normaly stay. I have no hope at all of them laying and raising any fry as there is to much for them to have to defend against. If i had another tank i'ld remove as many of the fish as i could, but i'am not going to be setting the pond back up!! lol

I do apologise to anybody that i have said that only females have a black throat as it appears the male's do to.

What happened to the Oscar?

mitch

Cheers mate.

Dont know what happened with oscar as it was hard watching what was going on when they were in the pond. I think i'ld had it apx 6 years and it was a size when i got it.
I gave the snake head away shortly after identfied what type it was as a big snakehead is'nt in my long term plans, although i may try some mid size ones though.

Rick, it's getting a hell of a lot of thought.

Rick Thibert
06-06-2010, 09:12 PM

mitch
06-06-2010, 09:54 PM
Thinking over!!

Not parting with anything, would consider the synspila red hooks and the cats but i think they'ld still struggle to breed with whats left.
Plus what would i possibly do with a load of fry, i am sure it'll be nice to say i breed these but it'll be a five minute wonder.
Thats not worth loosing some good fish over.

johnnyev

Well today is the last day i can take the spec back for a full refund but as he has settled well i'll be keeping him.

Watching him i dont tataly agree with you Rick as seems to be able to look after himself. Although he isn't aggresive himself he holds his own and doesnt move out of the way of anybody (apart from the Govner!) and has kicked the big bo's out of the place were they were looking to spawn last week and made that his home.

mitch
07-03-2010, 11:01 AM
Sorry if this is throwing a spanner in the works Mitch & i see what your saying.
But seems a shame to not see their breeding colours/behaviour & fry grow (hopefully) "Smile""Wink".

Am going to cut back and see what happens. The tank has been under treatment due to my jag not being good but now that s over i maybee giving up my synspila, pearsi and menerlurum. That should give me enough space to devide the bo's/hetro's (or if i am very lucky the argee's) if i see them courting again. Plus will be getting a female spec this week so that will another pair.

In a smaller tank a pair of karussi are going though the motions, cleaing a nest and chasing the others away but they are no match for the plec's in the tank so i'll be taking them out this week aswell to see what happens.

07-26-2010, 08:27 PM

Hi Mitch

Nice pick ups. I've found specs to be tough cookies, not agressive to tank mates but more than able to look after themselves. Major problem with them is getting a well suited pair, my first pair were fine but the last pair were hell on wheels, had to get rid in the end as they constantly tried to kill each other and anything that was unfortunate to cross their little dispute whilst it was going on. If you do get a well suited pair they are great.

Jim

Best you flog those heteros to me then Mitch! ;)

mitch
07-27-2010, 10:36 PM
Rick, these may be moved one one day...... thats if i ever get hold of the cichla i want and the cichla get so big the hetro's are an edable size to them......... mean while i'ld get some more myself if they came about.

Jim, Have picked up a W/C female from Ross and they have bonded well but even with me parting with a few big fish there to much in the tank for any of my pairs to breed successfully.

Fabulous Mitch! Did they turf the managuense in the end?

Can you pull the eggs??

mitch
07-29-2010, 10:51 PM
LOL No they didn't move the Jag, they moved and done the deed in a pot. Its all going on at the mo, the bo's tubes are down and there flirting with each other again and the spec's are defending and cleaning a piece of bog wood i one of the front corners, ufortionatly there out of site so dunno whats happening behind the wood.

Not going to pull the hetro eggs as have nowhere to put them at the mo plus the hetro's are siblings. If the spec's or bo's lay and i've moved the puffer on i will try and pull there egg's, there'll have to be quick though as hopefully i'll be getting some small cichla next week to go into the puffer tank.

Which leaves me to say i will have to unfortionatly part with the puffer before i get attached to it, shame there great fish! If anybody is interested pm me.

Cheers all!

Only time will tell with these as there are a few preditors in the tank and there fairly near the pump. Watching them, Mum and dad seem to be taking turns at coming out to have a look around.

I saw the add for your spec's, it came up a few days after ordering my female otherwise i would of jumped at them.
Still think your mad selling the though!

I came home last night and all the spec eggs had gone, i was a bit peed to say the least but looking this morning i have noticed that they have been moved and they are all wriggling so all looks good so far.

The only down side is mum and dad have marks around there lips where i assume they have been defending the eggs from the other fish, i'll be keeping an eye on this to make sure it doesn't get any worse or infected.

I have one with hetro eggs in, dunno whats happening with them. (see query thread)

Gotta sort a air filter as there's a internal eheim in there and i think it could suck up the fry.

Place a bit of sponge with a rubber band over the inlet to the filter. Fry won't get sucked up, actually, it proves a good place to get a snack for them. :)

It does get dirty quickly though and will need cleaning quite often, slows flow rate.

Double bad news!

I went to bed last night with 100's of free swimming spec fry which i was hoping to get a pic and post here tonight but there doesnt seem to be any in there now.
And there isn't many hetro fry left now either.

I was just starting to think this breeding stuff was easy...... well it may be but raising the fry???????

Question, if/when you have fry do you carry out water changes as normal or should you cut back a bit??

Asking as i carried out water changes last night and wondered if it could be linked to the loss or just coincedence?

Rick Thibert

Max 25% and don't change the temp too much.................. fry are sensitive and need stability, but clean water the same................. so, common sense and re-fill very slowly

Well out of all the fry i had i only have apx 20-30 hetro fry left.
When/if my spec's lay again i think i'll try and get the egg's/fry out as soon as i can to try and grow them on.

Those are bad numbers for raising Mitch! :) Grow faster and less pollutant to the tank water. You gonna bring some for me in October to buy?? :)

But there'll be more for sure, may have to wait until next year though.

Due to a high work load over the last month the fish have been neglected and i have lost one of the krausi which was apparently being picked on.
So today i'am having a fish day, carrying out water change's and a genral tidy up.
I am going to take a risk and put the krausi in the 9' tank as they are fighting in the 3', i think its down to them not having enough space.
I am also going to take the Jag out for a while as he's not to good again.

Rick i hear what youy saying about the terrapins but i like em even though it means i have to have an open top tank which stops me from having another arowana.

Water change's done, krausi moved into the big tank and appear to like it even though there the smallest by far!
Leaving the jag as he's up and about now but will keep an eye on him. I've put some pots back in the tank for any spawners as when i put them in before the spec's and hetro's spawned.

Need to get hold of a small tank for fry as i wanna dismantel 1 of the 3' and the other one is going to be used to grow some cichla.

Orinocensis, i have 2 with my name on with Danny Hawkings at tropical imports. If you read though previous posts i thought he was going to let me down but i am happy to say he has them still.

Problem is being home to take a delivery.
