I found these photos on one of the dutch forums. I notice that a lot of you guys decorate your tank with a lot of this kind of wood. My question is what type of wood is it and do you collect it yourselves?

Excuse my ignorance, but what tree does "Wortelhout" come from? Does this stuff need weighing down or fixing when put in the aquarium? I really admire how some of you guys decorate your aquariums over there."Cool"

I hope that my translation is right otherwile i think Pascal or sebas knows it "Blink1" The ''wortelhout' is from the peat area i have read that this is somewere at the German border i don't know from with tree's it is.

I have a few pieces in my tank this wood need some time to sink it's verry light an gives a ''orange/brown'' color to the water (Good for in a tank with fish from South America) I have used some of this kind of wood and it's good for the decoration.

Thanks for the info michael."Blink1" Hmm, i wonder if this tree can be sourced over here in the uk? I have collected my own to decorate my tank, this is sourced from beech and oak trees. The bog wood we tend to get sold here is expensive and very limited in size and shape, thats why i'd rather collect it myself. Thanks again.

It’s originating from trees which has been burried for centuries. Most of the time this happened in Marshes. They fell in the water/marshes and got covert with detritus. The detritus-layer became more thickley. Then the detritus became peak and the wood into this peak lost every contact with oxygen. Cause of this the would couldn’t rot anymore. With other words, the wood was conserved. This wood isn’t from a particular tree. It has it’s origin in different kind of trees and they can all be used, but there are differences in the quality of it. For example the wood originated from oaks is heavier and harder than the wood originated from conifers. Cause of this it will sink more easier and will not fare that quick.

Hence the name Bog-wood. The same thing happens in Ireland, you can pick up bogwood on the side of the road in some remote places!!
